Who Is J R Scientific
J R Scientific, Inc. (JRS), headquartered in Woodland, California, was started in a garage in mid 1979. Early products produced by the company were used as components by diagnostic kit manufacturers. JRS expanded its product line extensively into large animal sera, protein extraction from tissues, fractionation of sera proteins, Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) and cell culture reagents.

In mid 1985, JRS became part of an international biotechnology company, Porton International. The synergy of the biotechnology group and the innovations of JRS defined the company as a pioneer in areas of product delivery utilizing soft wall containers for liquid cell culture media and of the largest single lot sizes of cell culture powdered media utilized at the time.

The cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) facility was completed in 1986 and successfully manufactured over 400 cell culture products, including such products as biologically derived animal proteins, FBS replacements, chemically defined serum-free media, animal-free cell culture media, specialized reagents to the diagnostic, biotechnology, veterinary and pharmaceutical industries, on a global scale.

JRS is registered as a Class I Medical Device manufacturer with the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In late 1989, JRS led the merger of Hazelton Laboratories and J R Scientific, forming the successful entity JRH Biosciences. JRH Biosciences became a very successful leader with the industrial customer base for large lot production of cell culture media and FBS.

JRH Biosciences legally abandoned the use of the name J R Scientific, Inc. and its logo in 1990. In 1991, Randolph Nieffenegger resigned from positions on various boards of director of Porton International and retired from JRH Biosciences. J R Scientific, Inc. was incorporated as a legal entity in 1991 and the company began doing business under the brand name Nieffenegger Company. J R Scientific owns the trademarked logo of the company. JRS developed a number of product lines with niche market application serving the diagnostic kit manufacturing market sector. Private labeled OEM products became a business line in the late 1990s with innovative applications serving the cell culture market sector. In 2003 the clean room manufacturing suites were expanded, doubling the cGMP manufacturing core. The manufacturing facilities were designed to provide segregated manufacturing processes for animal derived products and products that are serum-free or animal-free proteins in nature.

JRS provides both confidential OEM manufacturing services and direct product sales and support through qualified customer services. Unique strategic alliances and working partnerships have been developed providing world-class products to the cell culture market sector. These alliances provide power of co-operation, thus providing JRS customers the best products and technical support available. In 2003, the product brand was transitioned to the J R Scientific name and respective logo. The cGMP manufacturing facility produces Class I Medical Devices and is registered with the FDA; providing quality products and services to the cell culture sciences.
